The Amazing Joy Buzzards

The Amazing Joy Buzzards is a comic book series created by Mark Andrew Smith and Dan Hipp and published by Image Comics. The Amazing Joy Buzzards was first published in January 2005. Since its inception there have been two series of single issues as well as two collected volumes of the Amazing Joy Buzzards in trade paperback. June 2008 saw a "Director's Edition" reprint of Amazing Joy Buzzards Volumes One and Two in a digest size. Mark Smith and Dan Hipp have recently stated that the next volume of the Amazing Joy Buzzards titled "Monster Love" will be released in October of 2008. There are three digest sized volumes planned with the final in the series titled "Strohm's Pit".

Plot
The Amazing Joy Buzzards are a rock-and-roll adventure band that fights evil in all its forms, comprising band members Biff Ashby, Gabe Carlyle and Stevo Vargas. The band is managed by Dalton Warner of the Creative International Artists Agency, which is really the Central Intelligence Agency, unbeknownst to the band. Dalton uses the band as a cover to get into places he might otherwise be unable to. He also uses the band's knack for defeating supernatural evils to his advantage. Moreover, Gabe carries an amulet which can summon the mythical Mexican wrestler El Campeon.

Characters

Heroes
Biff Ashby (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #1) is the lead singer of the Amazing Joy Buzzards. He has mysterious green eyes that no woman can resist and an ego larger than the Colossus of Rhodes. Biff is always game for the ladies, but doesn't mind taking lumps for the lads. His stage presence only hints at his future importance to the world. Don't tell him that though, his head doesn't need to grow any larger.

Stevo Vargas (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #1) is the Amazing Joy Buzzards' bass player who's the wildest one of the bunch. Stevo is a martial arts expert and a champion racecar driver. The world moves around him at its own pace but Stevo moves to the beat of his own drum. It may be hard to understand what Stevo is saying, but just make sure you're standing on his side in a skirmish. Some people suspect that he is half yeti.

Gabe Carlyle (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #1) is the geek-sheik drummer of the band with the super sexy brains of the bunch. He may not have the smashing looks of Biff, or the agility of Stevo, but when it comes to solving a mystery he would be the one to encourage. Gabe's father was an archeologist that went missing while exploring a strange land many years ago and Gabe is still hopeful of finding him to this day.

El Campeon (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #1) is the loyal mystical Mexican wrestler guardian of the band who happens to be a genie. Every band should have an El Campeon. El Campeon loves cereal, churos and donuts, and can sleep for entire weeks at a time. The boys can summon El Campeon by using a magic amulet and yelling the magic words: "GO EL CAMPEON GO!". El Campeon is brutal in battle, but easily distracted by edibles.

Professor Yu (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #1) is the "M" of the Amazing Joy Buzzards. He is a world-renowned scientist who believes in the Amazing Joy Buzzards and has gotten them into and out of many situations with his inventions. Gabe is good friends with the Professor but has had more interest in the Professor's daughter Betty than in science as of late.

Betty Yu (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #2) is the daughter of Professor Yu with super sexy brains, a winning personality, and is always up for an adventure. Since the Island of Maru excursion Gabe and Betty have become quite the pair.

Dalton Warner (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #3) is the manager and the handler of the Amazing Joy Buzzards. He works for Creative International Artists which uses the band's bigger-than-Elvis status to make the world a safer place. Dalton's signature items are a 1965 Shelby Cobra, a silencer, and a pencil-thin mustache. His favorite drink is a Maker's Mark. Dalton discovered the band playing in Costa Rica at their Uncle Vargas' hotel.

Murphy (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #3) is a mysterious female agent who's an old flame from Dalton's past that keeps popping up. Despite Dalton's special CIA training he still can't hide the fact that he has feelings for her even after all this time. She's a wildcard, a weapons and tactics expert and good in a clutch. Just don't leave any knives around her, you never know where they might end up. Her signature drink is a Greyhound, heavy on the vodka.

Villains
The Puppeteer (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #2) is the diminutive leader of the Spider Syndicate, a group of Supernatural Mod Hipsters who want to take over the world to make it a better place after being influenced by the spirit of the counterculture from the 1960s when anything seemed possible. The Spiders date far, far back and have changed direction considerably under the guidance of The Puppeteer. His age is unknown, but he's pretty old. He's something of a misunderstood genius, inventor, and mad scientist who wants to take over the world to make it a better place and change the status quo. He's also got a small army of KILLER VAMPIRE ROBOTS! at his disposal. His favorite drink is Castle Knappogue but it makes him tipsy and he can't drink too much or hold too much liquor because of his small size. He's also got a giant crush on Ivep, who's got a giant crush on someone else.

Donovan the Devil Mummy Hipster (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 2 #1) is from Russia and he's quite the Scenester. He's got a good heart on him and is well read. He's a sucker for Apple Martinis, nice suits, and owns all of The Amazing Joy Buzzards' albums, ever the devoted fan.

The Pink Bot (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #1) used to be the scourge of the robot underworld under the name Darkbot, while fighting the AJB in an earlier encounter he fell into a vat and was dyed pink losing all credibility with the other underworld robots. He swore revenge on the Amazing Joy Buzzards and turned Stevo into a giant Gila Monster in AJB #1. He's in jail now after running into El Campeon's elbow.

Madam Ivep (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #2) is a stunning supernatural beauty and it's no wonder that the Puppeteer has fallen so hard for her and that he's wound so tightly around her finger. She's really, really old, but has held up well over the centuries. She's madly in love with Galesh who she sprung from his tomb in the Amazing Joy Buzzards and the Island of Maru.

Galesh (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #2) is an Angel who gave up his wings to walk the Earth among men centuries ago. During a raid on a Caravan he got hit over the head with a rock and forgot all about his angelic nature. He was taken Prisoner by a king, and bled to prolong the King's daughters' life. After escaping he vowed to take revenge on man for the crimes against him. He joined up with Strohm, the architect of the tower of Babel, and set out to create a tower of Babel in reverse to end humanity. He got stopped and entombed but the bad news is he's out and about again, and honestly I'd be more than a little worried. During the Island of Maru incident he had a stare down with Gabe and stole his leather jacket and Gabe's vowed to get it back.

Hypno (First Appearance: AJB Vol. #1) is a Hollywood agent, who's got Hypnotic Powers. He's just a minor villain but enough said, if you stare into his hypno amulet for too long you might find yourself doing his bidding.

Killer Vampire Robots! (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #2) are the foot soldiers of the Spiders, they may just be mechanical but their bite sure hurts, just ask El Campeon!

Joe Stereo (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 1 #1) is a Brit Punker who hates the Amazing Joy Buzzards for being number one on the charts. He's tired of living in their shadow and I've got a feeling he'll soon be up to no good. He was nearly crushed to death with his grand pappy by a mutated Stevo Vargas Gila Monster. His Band is called Joe Stereo & The Sex Kittens.

El Chupa (First Appearance: AJB Vol. 2 #1) is the sworn enemy of El Campeon and he controls the continent of Central America. He's the leader of the Chupacabras and is a nasty one to face, as he's almost a direct doppelganger of El Campeon but we'll find out more about that later. Their feud goes back hundreds of years. There's about four different varieties of Chupacabras. He's of the Alphacabra variety, and the ones that go after livestock are the Beta Cabras who are his minions. The other two breeds are extremely rare. Favorite drink Tequila. If there's evil afoot in Central America, most likely he's behind it.

El Chicos Meurtes & El Chavo (First Appearances: AJB Vol. 2 #3) are some of the many rival luchadores who come out of the woodwork to challenge El Campeon. There's hundreds more where those two came from.

Black Peter & Yanni The Christmas Troll (First Appearance: Image Comics 2005 Holiday Special) are two villains who set out to hijack Christmas, thankfully El Campeon happens to show up at the North Pole to save the day.

Anton Loveless (First Appearance: The Amazing Joy Buzzards Vol.2 Original Trade Paperback Story) is the leader of the Goth Vampire band named GreatWhiteLionSnake who the Amazing Joy Buzzards go up against to defend the purity of Rock and Roll.

1. The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses.

2. It's impossible to tell if someone is really awake without close medical supervision. People can take cat naps with their eyes open without even being aware of it.

3. Anything less than five minutes to fall asleep at night means you're sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you're still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day.

Since the day I received this particular link in the mail I have been trying to find the elder community Didi, who shares wisdom with the aid of simple tools like beads or seeds, mangoes and short stories; the kid who actually truly believes that the elder Didi is the wiser one and listens to her solution; the other kids whose appetite is satiated with fresh mangoes plucked from the trees unlike those dissatisfied bundles of trouble I spot around with designer shoes and garb outside Mc Donald’s always greedily asking for one more Happy Meal. The simple solution that the animation (though not of the state of the art category) provides to a problem that infects and threats not only India but the entire globe in today’s times is incomparable to anything I have seen so far.

The melody is something that beats the best of the pop songs and the filmi latka jhatkas of today. Its simple and I am ready to wager a fortune that once the tune registers in your mind it is a difficult one to let go. The innocence in the voice of Sadhna Sargam, who rendered her voice to the character of Didi, is of the quality that you can almost touch it if you try hard enough. The music by Vasant Desai complements the simplicity of the narrative without actually ever underestimating the power or the importance of the message.

The illustrations are single line figures without too much detailing, yet aptly defining and demarking each n every character. The regional and religious characters of all the varied segments of Indians are fittingly depicted in the 5 minute animation. Bhim Sain, better known today as the creator of the animated series on Hanuman, did the animations for Ek Chidya which I believe laid the foundation for other Indian animations as well.

The credit of the final product as usual goes to the captain of the ship i.e., the director Vijaya Mule. The conceptualization and execution is something that touches a chord with the audience even today. There is no better way to end the piece than to quote the chorus of the song. But writing just the chorus feels like doing injustice to the rest of the lyrics. So to refresh your memories I present the transcript of the song of our childhood and something that I hope passes down to our children one day as folklore or verbal tradition.

Sarantakos is an American musician, magician, illusionist, escapologist, stunt performer, and the creator and director of the Criss Angel Mindfreak television series on A&E Network. Now he is trying to simulate and replay what Jesus Christ did more than 2000 years ago, by walking on water, in a magic and illusion performance that’s stunning.

What’s the secret of Criss Angel walks on water magic trick? How he does it? The secret will most likely points to illusion and camera video editing. The most convincing explaination to the trick is that Criss Angel was walking on some kind of floating device, or plexiglass, or transparent plastic bridge, or glass path, or vertical poles, which may have some gaps for swimmers to occasionally swin across it. Some also suggested that wires support was been used to hang him, which may be positioned under his arm, especially on the first 25 seconds or so. For all these tricks and optical illusion to happen, so all the ‘audiences’ and ’swimmers’ in the vidoe are actually the actors in the magic that were hired to add realistic and believable feel. The video may be edited by using CGI to hide the think platform in the water.

Some even suggested that the shots were taken on different times that is edited together to give you that illusion of reality. The theory is that because at some times he demonstrated no weight hitting the surface, while on the far away shots, his weight is visible as he hits a surface. Another theory is that the toes on his back foot bend as walking on a flat surface, while on another sequence of the video which supposedly shot from Criss Angel’s camera as he looks down while walking, his toes no longer bend.

Some interesting points highlighted from the video on the magic are:

1. Criss Angel walked on his heels and his pant hung down and covered the heels.

2. His walking style looks unreal and unnatural on the front part of the magic

3. The girl in red bikini swam underneath the water instead of crossing the path.

4. Water line on his pants changed, if you believe that the magic sequence was shot in multiple times.

5. A girl crossed between his legs after he took down his shoes, so the area may be without any platform.

6. In some shots, Criss Angel didn’t show weight hitting or weight shifting when stepped down, which made suspension possible.

7. His feet seemed like not stay in a position when stepping.

Bangalore boy Suhas Gopinath launched Globals Inc at 14. Today, his firm is a 60-member strong with all of them aged 17 to 22 years.

It was Catch-22 with a heartbreaking twist. Even before the first faint stubble had darkened his chin, Suhas Gopinath bagged a major outsourcing project that many others would have given their right hand for. But only to be told that the law said he was too young to sign on the dotted line.

That’s the story of this 17-year-old Bangalore boy wanting to be another Bill Gates. He had launched his own firm at the ripe old age of 14 years. Today, his firm, Globals Inc, is 60-member strong with representatives in the US, the UK, Canada and India—all of them aged 17 to 22 years. None of the members have had any formal computer education. Incidentally, Globals’ young CEO had originally wanted to be a veterinarian, until he was in Class IX and the cyber bug bit him.

‘‘I had no knowledge of the Internet. But when I was browsing the Internet in a cyber cafe I stumbled on a source code of a web site. I was fascinated and thought long and hard. I soon launched my own website, www.coolhindustan.com,’’ says Gopinath, fingering his navy blue blazer and battling a pronounced stammer, at the Bangalore IT.COM 2003 venue. That had happened when he had still not crossed 14 years.

A week later, recognition came when Network Solutions Inc, owned by Nasdaq-listed New York-based Verisign Inc gave him the certificate of a professional web developer. He was invited to Network Solutions headquarters and even asked to maintain their web site. Now hold your breath: ‘‘I declined because I was not interested in serving a US company.’’

Gopinath says it was the attachment to his family and the ambition to start his own organisation that brought him back to India.

Having passed Class XII in computer science, his veterinarian dream has faded off, but he loves spending his free time with Bushy, his pet dog. ‘‘I don’t have girlfriends,’’ the tiny CEO tells you with a straight face. Globals Inc took shape initially with only four members, and Network Solutions helped him to incorporate the company in the US. ‘‘I was told that in India, you need to pay sales tax and also have an infrastructure before you can register a firm. But all our members work from home or from a cyber cafe,’’ he says.

Gopinath’s company is into web-based and software solutions, mobile and e-commerce solutions—besides making web sites for corporates, advertisers and educational institutions. But Gopinath doesn’t get carried away with the pricing part. ‘‘We even have a client in Frankfurt for whom we made a corporate website. In the last two years, we have been able to generate a revenue of Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000. We charge only Rs 200-Rs 300 for making a website,’’ he says.

Gopinath had never thought of himself and his team as being far too young in their highly competitive domain, until a Singapore-based business process outsourcing (BPO) company, SingT Inc, approached them. ‘‘They wanted to outsource their projects to us. Everything fell into place, until the moment I found that the law wouldn’t allow me to sign the contract because I was not 18 yet.’’

Not that it has been too much of a dampener. He is now waiting to have the necessary infrastructure in place so that he can incorporate his company in India. ‘‘At any cost, ours will be a purely Indian company.’’

Not just that. Globals Inc has approached the University of Michigan for building a message board that can be a forum for students. ‘‘We also approached the Karnataka Government for projects, but they said the Government projects are given out only to big companies. But we too will be a CMM Level 5 company soon,’’ says a confident Gopinath, straightening his blazer.

Gopinath has already put the management structure in place. There is a chief operating officer, chief information officer, chief technology officer and vice-president (Human Resources)—all teenagers. But with only a modest Rs 40,000 revenue to be shared among the members yet, the firm has not yet thought of a chief financial officer. ‘‘Members who use cyber cafes are given some extra money to cover that charges,’’ adds Gopinath.

The boy CEO has now applied to Stanford University and is eagerly waiting for the result. But he has not let go his entrepreneurial spirit. ‘‘If I get into Stanford, I will get business from the US too,’’ he enthuses. His ambition is to found another Microsoft. ‘‘Initially, when my mom used to scold me, I used to give her Bill Gates’s example. He is my role model.’’

Joining Globals Inc is simple, provided you are in the 17-22 year age group. ‘‘The membership is free of cost. Once you fill up the form and enter your skill set, we will assign a project. And you become a part of our family,’’ he says.

For, this 17-year-old believes that academic skill sets are not the end. ‘‘We need more of personal skill sets to achieve goals,’’ he quips sagely.

5. Deter ants. Spray vinegar around door and window frames, under appliances, and along other known ant trails.

6. Keep car windows frost free. Coat the windows the night before with a solution of three parts vinegar to one part water.

7. Polish car chrome. Apply full strength with a soft cloth.

8. Soak new propane latern wicks in vinegar for several hours. Let dry before using. Will burn longer and brighter.

9. Clean milking equipment. Rinse with vinegar to leave system clean, odorless, and bacteria free without harmful chemical residue.

10. Remove skunk odor from a dog. Rub fur with vinegar.

11. Keep cats away. Sprinkle vinegar on an area to discourage cats from walking,sleeping, or scratching on it.

12. Keep dogs from scratching ears. Clean the inside of the ears with a soft cloth dipped in diluted vinegar.

13. Keep away fleas and mange. Add a little vinegar to your pet's drinking water.

14. Keep chickens from pecking each other. Add cider vinegar to their drinking water.

15. Make buttermilk. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of milk and let it stand 5 minutes to thicken.

16. Tenderize meat. Soak in vinegar overnight.

17. Freshen vegetables. Soak wilted vegetables in a quart of cold water and a tablespoon of vinegar.

18. Replace a lemon. Substitute 1/4 teaspoon of vinegar for 1 teaspoon of lemon juice.

19. Firm up gelatin. Add a teaspoon of vinegar for every box of gelatin used to keep those molded desserts from sagging in the summer heat.

32. Clear up warts. Apply a lotion of half cider vinegar and half glycerin.

33. Treat sinus infections and chest colds. Add 1/4 cup or more vinegar to the vaporizer.

34. Feel good. A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, with a bit of honey added for flavor, will take the edge off your appetite and give you an overall healthy feeling.

35. Deodorize the kitchen drain. Pour a cup down the drain once a week. Let stand 30 minutes and then flush with cold water.

36. Eliminate onion odor. Rub on your fingers before and after slicing.

37. Clean and disinfect wood cutting boards. Wipe with full strength vinegar.

38. Remove fruit stains from hands. Rub with vinegar.

39. Cut grease and odor on dishes. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to hot soapy water.

40. Clean a teapot. Boil a mixture of water and vinegar in the teapot. Wipe away the grime.

41. Freshen a lunchbox. Soak a piece of bread in vinegar and let it sit in the unchbox over night.

42. Clean the refrigerator. Wash with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar.

43. Unclog a drain. Pour a handful of baking soda down the drain and add 1/2 cup of vinegar. Rinse with hot water.

44. Clean and deodorize the garbage disposal. Make vinegar ice cubes and feed them down the disposal. After grinding, run cold water through a minute.

45. Clean and deodorize jars. Rinse mayonnaise, peanut butter, and mustard jars with vinegar when empty.

46. Clean the dishwasher. Run a cup of vinegar through the whole cycle once a month to reduce soap build up on the inner mechanisms and on glassware.

47. Clean stainless steel. Wipe with a vinegar dampened cloth.

48. Clean china and fine glassware. Add acup of vinegar to a sink of warm water. Gently dip the glass or china in the solution and let dry.

49. Get stains out of pots. Fill pot with a solution of 3 tablespoons of vinegar to a pint of water. Boil until stain loosens and can be washed away.

50. Clean the microwave. Boil a solution of 1/4 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of water in the microwave. Will loosen splattered on food and deodorize.

51. Dissolve rust from bolts and other metals. Soak in full strength vinegar.

52. Get rid of cooking smells. Let simmer a small pot of vinegar and water solution.
53. Unclog steam iron. Pour equal amounts of vinegar and water into the iron's water chamber. Turn to steam and leave the iron on for 5 minutes in an upright postion. Then uplug and allow to cool. Any loose particles should come out when you empty the water.

54. Clean a scorched iron plate. Heat equal parts vinegar and salt in a small pan. Rub solution on the cooled iron surface to remove dark or burned stains.

55. Get rid of lint in clothes. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle.

56. Keep colors from running. Immerse clothes in full strength vinegar before washing.

57. Freshen up the washing machine. Periodically, pour a cup of vinegar in the machine and let in run through a regular cycle (no clothes added). Will dissolve soap residue.

58. Brighten fabric colors. Add a 1/2 cup vinegar to the rinse cycle.

59. Take grease off suede. Dip a toothbrush in vinegar and gently brush over grease spot.

60. Remove tough stains. Gently rub on fruit, jam, mustard, coffee, tea. Then wash as usual.

61. Get smoke smell out of clothes. Add a cup of vinegar to a bath tub of hot water. Hang clothes above the steam.

62. Remove decals. Brush with a couple coats of vinegar. Allow to soak in. Wash off.

63. Clean eyeglasses. Wipe each lens with a drop of vinegar.

64. Freshen cut flowers. Add 2 tablespoons vinegar and 1 teaspoon sugar for each quart of water.
